Smooth test – dino1

KB,
Something else I thought about is that sometimes when I want to do a very shallow subtraction, I get the error that says it will not be a solid object, or something to that effect.

When that happens I often resort to using a negative Extrude instead which seems to work better in some cases. There really is a lot to be said for the Extrude Operation…. ;D

This was a bit of fun playing with the smooth option inn 3dc.

I know it is not Jurassic Park <!– s:) –><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_e_smile.gif" alt=":)" title="Smile" /><!– s:) –>

Re spikes – sometimes I get these and I don’t know enough about andquot;smoothandquot; to really help (which is why I am playing with smooth at the moment to try and learn <!– s:) –><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_e_smile.gif" alt=":)" title="Smile" /><!– s:) –> )

When I did this one I found I was gtting spikes but I had altered the default setting up to 45 (from 0) – when I set it back it worked. Also found that if I get spikes then changing the less than to greater than (or the other way around) sometimes helps…..

I think I will try a few more experiments – and if that does not help then I might have to read the instructions ……

Alan,
Very cool Dino indeed…… ;D I like it!

Spikes when smoothing? Could you post a pic?

Les

Oh yes the tutorial …. I must get back to that andnbsp;:-[ (should be finished in two weeks andnbsp;:) )

I must need a rest from the computer….

1 . smooth option inn ? well it would be a good name for a pub !

2. got the year wrong 010714 andnbsp;:-[ – should be 020714

oh well time for a brew ! <!– s:) –><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_e_smile.gif" alt=":)" title="Smile" /><!– s:) –>

Very pre-cambrian. I keep getting spikes all over when I smooth.
andnbsp; So this is why your andquot;Legsandquot; tutorial isn’t finished!

KB,
I’ve noticed especially after doing a boolean subtraction, and then smoothing, that there will be areas that don’t smooth properly. I think maybe this is due to the way the subtraction works, in that is has to andquot;cut-awayandquot; a peice or area of the model, leaving some jagged/uneven areas. What I mean is maybe it leaves an area where not all points, faces, or edges are properly connected to one another. That may not be a good description of how it works or of what it does, but it’s the best way I know how to describe it.

Try to look at the subtracted area very thoroughly, before smoothing, from all possible angles, looking especially for points that might need one of the welding operations. Also look for faces and edges that don’t appear to be connected properly. If there are any open gaps between faces it could leave spikes or rough edges after smoothing. You may even have to get inside the model to find some of them. I have to do a bit of Welding at times to solve this type of problem.

Hope this helps,

Les

A quick example of smooth – one showing andquot;more thanandquot; the other andquot;less thanandquot;.

Hi Guys,
andnbsp; Instructions? <!– s:P –><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_razz.gif" alt=":P" title="Razz" /><!– s:P –>
andnbsp;I’ve tried a couple different settings with the same results. This was just an experimant gone awry. The domino effect is amazing! One minute I’m reading a post, three hours later I’m looking up awry in the dictionary because it looks funny. In between I’m trying to figure out how Alan gets that group of pictures together. Do you do that in a paint program? Neat and efficient.
andnbsp;Anyway, this was just an offshoot of Less’s model tutorial for an experiment, I think it’s a matter of which operations should or should not be done.Maybe I’m adding too many objects creating too many faces. When I used the subtraction to create the indentation in the pod it looked a little deformed, which is somehow messing up the face that is spiking. Does that sound right?

Answer
Yes <!– s:) –><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_e_smile.gif" alt=":)" title="Smile" /><!– s:) –>

Thanks to both of you, I’ll work on it.

Hi Les,
andnbsp;I have been getting that error, but when I’m trying to bridge the sections. The welding was helpfull, kind of fun, too! Is there a way to andquot;unweldandquot; points? I’ve created a twist a one point and have saved prior to welding, but it crossed my mind.
