Skinning Bones

OK Richard, I’m sending it to you now.

James

Hi all,

I’ve been working on a model over the last few weeks and have now started to skin the bones I’ve created for it. When doing so all was going to plan until I got an error#91 on a certain bone. When loading 3DC again and agreeing to recover the file, the model/scene load ok but the texture has been lost with no way of recovering that <!– s:? –><!– s:? –>
So what I now do is save the file after every bone I skined, leaving the one I was getting an error with. While skinning the rest I eventualy came across another bone giving the same error, leaving this one too and Continuing with the oters again. Now I have almost finished the skinning process and there is a total of five bones giving the error#91. There’s about 10 bones left to skin. After having this problem for most of the week I thought I’ld check the forums again and came across a similar snag from gmani, who got around this by loading the model into 6.5.5. Here the error does not seem to accur, at least not with the five bones I was having problems with, and when I load the model with the fixed bones back into 6.6 everything is spot on. Thanks, to you gmani for finding this trick, it works a treat <!– s:D –><!– s:D –>

I think this is a strange thing that happens and after all the yappin’ I’ld just like to know if this can be fixed? Is it a bug?

If anyone else is getting an error#91, maybe even for a different reason, then this could be the way around the problem?

Thanks.

James

Hi James,

I was getting error 91 too until I downloaded the most recent MDAC update from MS. There is a link in FAQ section of the main site.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply Richard <!– s:) –><!– s:) –>.

I’ve already tried updating this and windows will not install the file.

6.5 don’t give this error for some reason. Do the two versions of 3DC work off of different mdac versions?

James

Hi James,

Yes, I think so, I’m running WinXP and kept getting the error until I updated the MDAC files. I’ve also installed DirectX 9.0c and this seems to help a bit. But like a couple of others in the community, 3DC 6.6 lags on my computer if there’s a lot of layers on the objects. My solution is to compact and save frequently.

Hope this helps.

Richard

Thanks Richard fpr the help <!– s:) –><!– s:) –>

I think I’ll just work in 6.6 for modeling and texturing and work in 6.5 for boning and skinning for now <!– s:) –><!– s:) –>

I’ve posted a screengrab so you can see the bones in this model I’m working on. The thing now though is, I think I’ve used the wrong bone type for the model. I’ve used the round ended bones, I think I should have used the normal cylinder ones. So I’m gonna change these now. The thoughts of that <!– s:roll: –><!– s:roll: –> <!– s:o –><!– s:o –> <!– s:roll: –><!– s:roll: –>

Is it ok to mix the two? Maybe just a few rounded ones with the normal ones? I don’t realy want to make any more mistakes with the bones.

Here’s why… about 250 bones I think. <!– s:D –><!– s:D –>

Hi James,

Can’t help you with whether a mix of bones will work. I’ve never done anything near organic yet. I’m still learning how to build aircraft and other things without mucking the surfaces up <!– s:D –><!– s:D –>

Richard

That’s quite alright Richard, I appreciate the relpy just the same. <!– s:D –><!– s:D –> I’ve started now anyways, so I won’t be long finding out.

James

Let me know how things turn out. <!– s:D –><!– s:D –>

Richard

Can you send me a copy of this model? I can then try to fix it in the next release of 6.6.

Thanks.

Richard
