Problem moving along ‘z’ axis

The default ‘standard’ coordinate mode uses the camara position to determine X and Z axes and they can swap – some operations don’t aways adhere to this.

World mode fixes the axes according to the scene main axis.

Screen mode used the exact camera position and sets X across, Z into and Y up the screen.

Object mode used the object group axis to determine XYZ

Face mode – not worked out that one yet.

I have recently begun experiencing a problem moving an object, edge, face or point along the ‘z’ axis. It mostly happens after using the scaling function. When I constrain the ‘x’ and ‘y’ axis, moving along the ‘z’ axis is not possible. Instead the item being moved can only be moved along one of the other axis in spite of their being constrained.

The only way I have been able to resolve this is to save the project, close 3DC and reload it. Movement along the ‘z’ axis is then possible for a while until I next use the scale function.

So far, I have not experienced a similar problem with movement along the ‘x’ or ‘y’ axis.

Hi BFM

You are probably using the wrong coordinate mode.
You can select the coordinates modes in the top menu bar. See picture

Hi BFM,
I was experiencing this problem many months ago and found the easiest resolve was to switch to a fixed side, or top view, from the perspective view and then move along the Z axis, constrain X and Y first.I always use this method now, as I find it to be far more precise.

Hi Big Peter, I always use the ‘edit in standard coordinate’ mode. I have never had any problems with this and never really tried other coordinate modes, but obviously they are selectable for a reason, probably more to do with texture application.Someone else may wish to clarify, but with my standard motto ‘if it works well, then leave it alone’, I am happy with it as is.
