Post your in progress train sim models here…

Hi

As far as I can see the animated load has to be hidden in the base of the wagon so if it is shaped it will either protrude into the wagon or under the floor when the wagon is empty. Perhaps a very subtle shaping would work.

Hi Geoff,

Ahh – good point – I didn’t think of that when I posted… Many people don’t bother with the freight animations… I used one on the Mountain in the previous posts – it’s pretty cool for the tender to look empty – when it is empty… My tender was substantially bigger so I had enough space to make it disappear… Again – nice work – sir…

Scott

Just my latest work in progress with 3DC 8.2 B1600 – as I haven’t moved my real projects to the "Crafter" yet…

Very impressive and inspirational Scott.

I can see a few tricky bits to do still, but look forward to seeing it textured.

Hi Geoff,

Thanks – yep – I still have much to do while keeping the POLYs under control… For MSTS I’m shooting for about 13K-14K… It should be manageable once I get in there and start trimming… I’m up to animating the rods not handled by Paul’s “Rod Animator”… Once I get them done – it should be fairly quick to build out the valve gear on the other side… The hardest part is getting all the rods lined up on the X axis prior to animation…

I see you work with Rail Sim ??? I may try to port some of my models over when I get this done – I’ll be asking for help – I’m sure…

Hi All,

I like to show one of my models I am currently working on.
It is a German steam loco Baureihe 82 for Railworks.

I just finished the animation of the rods, I am working now on the textures for the rods.

Here a render of the model.

And an in game screenshot.

Still a lot of detail to add and textures to make.

Gerrit

Hi Gerrit,

Wow – nice work sir… I always though the European steamers with the red wheels looked pretty slick… How are you with creating realistic physics ??? That’s somewhat of an art form in and of itself… I actually spend a great deal of time running the locomotives I build and I love hand firing them… LOL – but – I ALWAYS need help with creating the physics…

Do you plan on weathering it ??? If you do – I know a few useful tricks with Paint Shop Pro – just holler…
<!– s:) –><!– s:) –>

One other question – have you tried making "Custom LOD’s" for your model ??? I can’t get them to work on either of my two steam locomotives… The tenders and freight cars work fine – so I’m thinking either both my models have a problem – or there is something unique to a steam locomotive that is causing the exporter to choke on LOD’s…

Regards,
Scott

Hi Scott,

Thanks.

Not much thought on physics yet, although I have a lot of information about this loco, from books and magazins and of course the internet, for now I copied some values of existing locomotives.

Most of the textures I am using now are very temporarily, but as my artistic texturing skills are not very high, so yes, I am always in for a few useful tips.

As for the lods, I think lod making for Railworks is a bit different as in MSTS.
Lod making the way you try it, is probably also possible for Railworks.
But I do it a bit different, for Railworks I put all the detail in separate groups, and name them with a special prefix, for instance 1_0050_details, where the 0050 means not visible from 50 meters onwards.
It is to long ago, since I modeled for MSTS, to remember how it works exactly for MSTS.

Gerrit

Hi Gerrit,

Oh – sorry – I forgot it was for Railworks…

I’m not sure how mathematically inclined you are and if you’re comfortable with spreadsheets – but – Bill Hobbs (serious steam guru) created a pretty sophistocated spreadsheet to help you generate physics files for both MSTS and Railworks steam locomotives…

I think this link may work…
<!– m –>http://www.trainsim.com/kdl.php?fid=20778<!– m –>

If the link doesn’t work – it’s called "steamv3.zip" over in the US Train Sim file library…

I’m no expert on textures – but – I probably weather locomotives more than most – as US Steam locomotives just have to be dirty… I posted an example on the previous page of this thread… I’ll try to put some info together for you…

Regards,
Scott

Hi Scott,

Thanks for the link, that is certainly going to help.
Luckily I know my way around in spreadsheets.

I saw your models on the previous page, they look very nice, very well textured .

Gerrit

Morn’n Folks,

Some mighty fine modeling by one and all…
Keep up the good work…

Regards,
Scott

I hope new links look and work better than the ones above… Here’s a PRR style open hopper I started 8 years ago with 3DCanvas. I just did half of it. And now using 3DCrafter I mirrored it and have the whole model. 🙂
