Port Daniel..County section

Thanks for the info Alan..I didn’t know that was a freebie..I’ll take a look.

My first section of open countryside on the Port Daniel line is just about complete..I’m really pleased with the results.

I loaded two of these sections into Blitz..each is about a scale 500 metres long. As the first section dissapears from view I move it so it becomes the next section…and so on. All I need now are some different sections to make up the route.

The port Daniel line now boast five cameras..three are children of the loco, giving front and back views. The third is situated just behind the driving wheels looking forward..this gives a nice view of the driving wheels and con rod in action.

The forth camera is a high up static that gives a long shot of the scene, the fifth gives a ‘ Fly By’ helicopter view, moving along the length of the train.

This is the view from the rearward looking camera.

And this is the view from the ‘long shot’ camera.
I think I need to see if I can improve the camera angle and I need to practice my tree textures. <!– s:) –><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_e_smile.gif" alt=":)" title="Smile" /><!– s:) –>

Hey Bazza,

Drrooolll !!!!

Very nice and congratulations on the work you’ve done, it looks great. <!– s:) –><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_e_smile.gif" alt=":)" title="Smile" /><!– s:) –>

Thanks V_F,
It’s all starting to come together at last after nearly a years work…hopefully things will speed up a bit now that I have all the code working well in Blitz.

So are you doing your own train sim in blitz ?

Some comments on the pics ?

In the long shot I think you could do with some background hills adding to the sky dome (or maybe some fog to fade it out ?)

Love the rock textures and dry stone walls (reminds me of home)

Does the smoke change in relation to the speed of the train – it looks like the train is going very fast as the smoke is at a low angle)

I thought the trees looked good ’till you said about the textures now I am not too sure <!– s:) –><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_e_smile.gif" alt=":)" title="Smile" /><!– s:) –> Have youl looked into the low poly ‘tree generators’ you can buy ?

How fast do the sections load into blitz ? Have you thought about using a random section generator (I guess the track section must stay the same but you could do a random hill and tree placer ?)

Hope this post does not sound too negative ?

Hi Alan,
Thanks for the comments, all are welcome as other people spot things I’ve missed or not taken enough care over.

I’ve been building my train sim ib Blitz for about a year now but keep giving it a rest from time to time to mess around with FPS and Space themes.

I’m working on the distant hills in my new section and using fogging which is working quite well.

The smoke changes with the speed of the engine but I still need to do quite a bit of work on this. So I’ve just purchased a license for Particle Candy and I’m really pleased with the results so far.

The problem with the trees is poly count, plus with the cameras attached to the locos they flash past a quite a rate. This screenshot gives a somewhat false impression as it’s static. So I’m still experimenting and I’ll end up with what looks best..I hope.

Where the train slows or comes to a halt I’ve used Tree[d] but I still need to practice my tree/branch textures.

The other thing is I like to use Gile on the scenery sections. I’ve tried using Blitz to generate the terrain and random trees but without the lightmaps they look very ‘flat’.

At the moment I can load in three sections at once and vary these as required but I will be looking into this to see if I can find a better way.
By copying each section so it is twice it’s normal length, this give me nearly 3 scale miles of uninterupted running..to load in 3 new sections would take about 6 secs but I can always do a fade out fade in routine.

Thanks for the interest and comments.

Just seen on the Blitz site that treemagic is now free – see [img:39cqellp]http&#58;//www&#46;aliencodec&#46;com/products/treemagik_plus/index&#46;php[/img:39cqellp]
