Pauls’ GWR 527 Class Locomotive

Paul,
Thanks, the raytrace effect is achieved with GILE(S),it produces fantastic lightmaps. The image looks a bit dull on the forum I think it’s the white background. I’ll change the wheel colour and see how it looks. Blitz can easily handle the 10,000 polys and much more, the only problem might be with a large consist the poly count might get to high. I’ve just done a test animation of the wheelset and this works fine in Blitz.

For those of you who didn’t see the thread on ‘Thick walled tubing’ some details:-
Although I have MSTS installed on my computer and enjoy using it I’ve always thought it could be better on the graphics side especially with the new graphics card now on the market. So I thought I would have a go writing a small train sim in Blitz3D! I,m going to test both ways of doing things, using the standard .tga file format and alpha channel and an attempt at using models with ‘proper wheels’ etc. I needed a locomotive to make a start on the ‘prorer wheeled’ version so downloaded Pauls’ 537 Class.
This how it looks at the moment. I’ve rebuilt just about everything below the footplate so you could say it’s Pauls body and my legs! Still much to do though, as I’m using GILE(S) to do the lightmaps I’m having to take most of the shading and highlights of Pauls skin. I would appreciate any constructive comments from all you loco buffs.I,m not sure what colour the wheels should be? Paul had them a sort of rusty brown, is this the weathered look? I know I’ve gone a bit mad with the reflection map on the dome but I’m working on it. Only problem so far the poly count is just short of 10,000!!! Screenshot from Blitz

Almost looks like it has been raytraced <!– s:) –><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_e_smile.gif" alt=":)" title="Smile" /><!– s:) –>

The wheels were too brown on the original, a better colour would be dark grey/black (with a small hint of brown)

With 10,000 polys for a small tank loco, I hope Blitz3D is very efficient <!– s;) –><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_e_wink.gif" alt=";)" title="Wink" /><!– s;) –>
Using pure Direct3D I can already see I’m going to run into performance problems with my train sim.
