Out of Memory Error #7

I am working on a model which has a saved file size of 750K. Having opened the file in wireframe front view I try to change to plan view which is larger and get an out of memory error. I am using XP and the Task Manager shows a maximum usage of about 1G of an available 3.5G
Is there a setting somewhere in 3D Canvas which limits the memory usage.
I’m using 3D Canvas Pro 7.1.1.2

Sorry, I really don’t know the answer here. Perhaps the out of memory error is due to running out of memory on the graphics card. But, somehow I doubt that.

Just started getting Out of Memory Error #7. Using 3D Crafter 8.2.7 Build 1127 on a Win 7 64bit with 4 gig mem and 1 gig graphic mem. Saved file size is approx 15 mb and approx 40 mb of texture files. I get the error on using the IGS exporter in the file menu exporting to Railworks. If I reboot Windows and disable everything running in the background, empty the Texture and Component libraries then it will successfully export on about1 out of 3 occasions. Tried attaching Log file but got an error, extensions not allowed in attachments. Very frustrating as these do not seem to be excessively large models.

UPDATE: Think I may have found the problem. I had turned off User Account Control because of difficulties with Photoshop not saving files properly. Turned UAC back on and the export seems to work now.

Oh, that’s very interesting about UAC. I can’t imagine why it makes a difference.

Spoke too soon. Made a few small additions to the model and I’m back to error #7 again. Have to shut everything down in the background, remove all textures and objects in the libraries and reboot Windows. Then it will export as before 30% success rate. Is there some sort of memory leak happening or am I at the modelling and /or texture limits?

Further update on this, just swapped one texture for another already used on the model on 4 faces, and now it fails to export every time. Tried uninstalling 3D crafter and reinstalling but it made no difference. One thing that did change was that after the first fail Windows advised me that it had made changes to compatability.
Still can’t upload an attachment, extensions not allowed. Seems as if something happens when it starts reloading map.bmp which appears to be a PovRay file. Uninstalled PovRay but it made no difference. Still get error. Below are the last few lines from the log. before removing PovRay and then the complete log after removing PovRay which is a lot shorter.

em strange. Not much help I am sorry,
But I always understood that textures had be square, i.e 128 x 128 or 256 x 256 etc
if I am reading your log right, yours are not such.

Is this something I have missed maybe?

Also is BR-ARNC TriCom4 a part name?
as in "Error #: 7 Error Description: Out of memory Error Location: 3DCrafter – BR-ARNC TriCom4"

Hi Bigpeter

Due to your post I just spotted something I had overlooked, some of my textures are now 2048×2048. They should be 1024×1024. Not sure what happened there. I’ll reduce them back to 1024 and try again. A few textures of that size will soon eat memory.

In Railworks textures do not have to be square but have to be to a ratio of 2 such as 1024×256 or 128×1024. BR-ARNC TriCom4 is the file name of the model.

UPDATE: That cured it, 5 textures reduced and model exported OK. Still a bit suprised that 5 2048×2048 tex’s caused an out of memory. Used a lot more than that in another modeling program.

I’ve responded to your bug report. So, we can continue the discussion there I think.

I apologize for bumping this, but I really thought I ought to share this solution I found recently.

I have a 64-bit Windows 7 PC with 12GB of RAM. The model I’m building for Railworks got so big that I kept getting an “out of memory” error when trying to export it to an .igs file. It seemed to happen when the memory used by 3DC reached about 1.5GB. I fixed this by installing the “Explorer Suite” from NTCore (http://www.ntcore.com/4gb_patch.php) and then using its “CFF Explorer VII” tool, following the instructions given here to ensure that the executable of 3DC can handle more than 2GB of memory: http://www.talkgraphics.com/showthread.php?42418-32-bit-memory-limit-removal-utility&s=618af0a0b6a13771159d3ad990d3ee70
