New Model; Cobra Fighter

AI/AL… ;D

I would love to be able to use either the Orbiter sim or MS, but at the moment sadly to say, the pocket-book just can’t seem to stretch any farther. Maybe one day… <!– s:( –><!– s:( –>

Although, if someone made an offer I just couldn’t refuse…… ;D ;D ;D

P.S.
Just realized that Orbitor is free. Have downloaded and will try it. Thanks

Hi All,
Here’s a new fighter I just finished. Created with just a cube for the ship and a cone for the engine flame.

Les……. ;D

Up ’till now I always thought the andquot;scorpionandquot; was your best model……

To get the bends (wing in this case) do you extrude/shift or use some other way ?

How about doing a pic with several of your models in it – maybe a andquot;clash in spaceandquot; andnbsp;?

Also thanks for the Avenger model in downloads – I found it very interesing back stepping through it so see how you work.

OOuu.. Sexy!

Les andnbsp;I must say wonderful andnbsp; <!– s:oops: –><!– s:oops: –> <!– s:oops: –><!– s:oops: –>

Thanks everyone. I made quite a few mistakes on this one, and I’m surprised it turned out this nice. Came close to deleting it a few times…. <!– s:) –><!– s:) –>

Alan,
Usually, if I want uniformity like for wings, etc, then I do extrudes, then shift up/down/for andamp; aft/whatever, to a andquot;beginningandquot; portion, then extrude the rest of the wings, then do things like the guns. You can scale the end faces of the different portions of the wings for the tapering effect(thats the way I do it). After all that, the smoothing is what really gives it the contoured shape, as without it the wings would just be straight/flat.
You could probably do some of this using the bend or taper operations, but I have trouble getting everything uniform if I do it separately.
Also, when I extrude for wings, I do both sides at the same time. The same applies to shifting. This helps to insure the uniflormity/symmetry of the wings. Smoothing is the real key for me if I want contours/curves, but it really increases the poly-count also.
As for doing a scene with several of my models, I’ve thought about this a lot, but I’m experimenting right now with other things, so it may be a while yet.

Thanks again for the kudos,
Les

Alan,
Something else I should have mentioned is that sometimes, like with the Mako fighter model, I will smooth the model andquot;Beforeandquot; extruding the wings, so that I get a nicely contoured ship that has straight/flat type wings.

The only difficulty with doing it this way is that you may have to shift some points around to get straight/flat surfaces, either before or after the wing extrudes are done.

Les

Indi,
Well I suppose I have more or less a whole armada….. ;D

I’ve got probably 14 or 15 fighter, and fighter/bomber class ships, a mothership and cruiser that are similar to one another(still on the drawing board), plus a few odds and ends.

Now if I could just figure a way to use them…… ;D

Les

wow les u have been designing ships since i knew about your work from around 4.0.

how many ships do you have in space-dock now]?

a small band of rebel fighters

a medium sized fleet

or a galaxy patrol class armada !

Figure out a way to use them? Les, are you familiar with a space flight sim called Orbiter? Complete solar system to fly around in, accurate Newtonian physics, etc.

Check it out at [img:1rqx15nj]http://www.orbitersim.com[/img:1rqx15nj]

AI,
I have not heard of this sim until now. I will definitely check it out.
I’ve been looking for ways to convert my models to a format that would be suitable for use in Star Wars X-Wing Alliance, or maybe Tachyon: The Fringe. hehehe, I would love to fly one of my ships in these games….. ;D

Les

Aha!

Here it is.

I was about to rant about the preponderance of sans serif fonts on forum boards these days and the lack of clarity afforded by said same. But then I noticed that andquot;AIandquot; was decidedly different from andquot;Alandquot;. More to the point, upper case andquot;Iandquot; has serifs, lower case andquot;landquot; does not (so I guess it’s not entirely andquot;sansandquot; serif). :-/

So it’s not my fault. Perhaps I should change my user name to andquot;AL, darnit, as in ALEX!andquot; ;D (Note: andquot;Alexandquot; was already used.)

And in closing, any display of intelligence (or lack thereof) in the above statements should in no way be construed as artificial. Sadly, I came up with it all by myself. andnbsp;;D

And to try and stay somewhat reasonably on-topic, if you don’t get around to exporting these models to Orbiter, how about a few of them in MS FlightSim? That would be cool.
