No doubt that would be a good feature. And, in fact with a little effort, it could be done automatically by 3DC by using a revised andquot;reduceandquot; function that retains material information.
But, unfortunately it has to be considered a low priority compared to other possible enhancements.

Has anyone looked at Multiple LOD’s (Levels of detail)? In the MSTS techdocs it says that you can supply a set of models of various complexity to create a single model, and then, if it is a long way off, the renderer will use the simple model (which will be quicker) and if it is close up it will show the fully detailed model. However, no-one has managed to get conv3ds.exe to accept multiple files in this way, and it is possible that the models in MSTS do not have multiple LOD’s.
I suspect it may not be possible to sort this out until an SDK or more details about file formats is released by M$/Kuju but if 3DC could create the .s files, it would be a one-up on the guys with Max 3D Studio ;
