How to improve?

As you guessed, it is somewhat related to the amount of polys. The #4 view is exactly what you should do to prove a modell in sense of MSTS stability. If your model solves the #4 view test (regardles how you did it) it is rockstable for MSTS.

Hi to everyone! I’ve been away for a while, but I’m back again.
I have a problem with the MSTS. Every time, when I use sight # 4 and the loco comes very close to the camera, the program takes me out of the game. Does anyone know why this happen?
All my latest models took 14,000 polys at least. Are these two issues related?
Thanks and Regards,

Raul

Hi Raul…

I know precisely what you are talking about… The Santa Fe 4-8-4 from 3D Trainstuff – does EXACTLY that… The poly’s are kinda high on that one – around 10K… You have 14K – wow – seems like that is breaking new ground for me… I have never seen a 14K model… Funny thing is the new Cab Forwards have high poly’s – and – they work fine… Maybe they did figure something out…

Just an idea – when you have high poly models like that – would it pay – to split the shape file ??? Lower the overall Poly per shape… You should be able to somehow combine two shapes to represent one locomotive…

I had seen a post from Marc (3dTrains) talking about a similiar problem… I can’t find the thread at the moment… He seemed to think unlinking and relinking all the parts in the hierarchy might help
I had sent 3D Trainstuff the info – never got a response… No way of knowing if that would actually fix it…

If you figure this out – please let me know..

scott

OBTW – the one ‘work around’ I use on that 4-8-4… Make the camera focus on the tender instead of the engine… It seems to work and prevents the crashing issue… Not great – but – at least I can use that bit of payware…

Raul,

Try selecting each group in turn and counting triangles.

There may be a limit in MSTS for a single group of around 3000-5000 polys

While fewer groups is good for efficiency, there does seem to be a limit.

Scott:
I’ve already tried with the FreightAnim, but in Sight #1 you’ll see, besides the track, all the stuff of the second shape.

Paul:
Each group have less than 3,000 polys. But each model has 23 groups plus the Main.

I leave two captures of my last two models.

Regards,

Raul

Two captures of my latest locos.

Both locos are from North British for tha Buenos Aires and Pacific Railway, built in 1907
