FS9 FS2004 Exports

Hey Guys,

Been ages – I know…

I’d like to try exporting some simple models to FS9… Just some structures and trees for the moment…

Question – I noticed we have export capabilities for MSFS… I copied the MakeModel files into my 3DC directory… I noticed that when I export to BGL files – the exporter is requiring position coordinates be input… I’d like to just use my models with one of the model placement tools – such as Instant Scenery or ADEX9 – so I can place them anywhere…

Has anyone gone down this road before ? Is 3DC going to work for this ? What kind of file formats do I need my models to be in for input into FS9 ?

I searched the forum and I didn’t see many posts on the subject…

Any help appreciated…

Regards,
Scott

I just export as .X files and run the Fs9 Makemdl and select options for scenery.

Hi Paul,

LOL – thanks – I’m finding with scenery – there is sooo much more than just simple modeling…
<!– s:) –><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_e_smile.gif" alt=":)" title="Smile" /><!– s:) –>

SBuilder – ADEX9 – Photo Scenery – AFCADS – Autogen – VTP2 landclass – LWM – Excludes – Flattens – and so on and so on…

Just getting my satellite image down and blended into the terrain is taking forever…

Thanks for the tips…

Hi Paul,

Only if you’ve run across this – how do I get translucency into FS9 ??? It’s not the same way we do it for MSTS – is it ??? It seems as if models can support transparency be default – but – as soon as I try to make something translucent – it just uses a solid fill instead… I’m starting simple and just making some cross form trees – I want the shadow to fade out with my gradient as apposed to a hard defined circle…

Thanks !!!

Easy (I think) – just put a small translucency value in the material for 3DC (1 should do it) then export – also make sure your texture is exported from imagetool as a 32 bit BMP file.

Hi Paul,

I’m rolling along on my project and I can get my 3DC objects into FS9… I’m just building EZ/Instant/Runway12 libraries so the objects can be easily placed anywhere in the sim….

I’ve been exporting my work as Dierct X and then compiling with the FS9 tools…

So far – so good…

Question -I know you got into some advanced stuff – like building a plane – but – did you guys ever get into ground poly’s for scenery ???

I’m specifically trying to create some layered hi-res photo polygons for the runway – and – the base underneath it – so precision placement is essential…

If so – while I’m sure I can create and texture a ground poly – how do I get it into FS9 in the proper location ???

Would there be a way to actually load my satellite image into 3DC for a reference – complete with the geographic coordinates of the image – so I would have a reference to build my ground poly’s ???

As always – your wisdom – insights – and – comments are most welcome…

planes is as far as I got with FS9 and FSX.

I think ground polys should be possible with .X files again.

Hi Paul,

Thanks !!!

Are the MSFS exports listed in 3DC only for FSX ???

Hi Paul,

I think you are the only one around here who has messed with MSFS…

LOD’s – I have them kind of working but a few things don’t make sense…

I created the following heirarchy with basic cubes for my LOD test…

[b:19pf80v8]MAIN[/b:19pf80v8]
–Cube_LOD_10[/color:19pf80v8]
****Cube_LOD_10[/color:19pf80v8]
–Cube_LOD_40[/color:19pf80v8]
****Cube_LOD_40[/color:19pf80v8]
–Cube_LOD_100[/color:19pf80v8]
****Cube_LOD_100[/color:19pf80v8]

Blue=Group
Red=Shape

I did the &quot;Shift Center&quot; routine on the bottom face of each cube…

Now when I load my test model into FS9 I notice the following…

The &quot;LOD_100&quot; is actually the closest model displayed and the &quot;LOD_10&quot; model is the one actually the furthest away… Isn’t that counterintuitive – or – am I doing something wrong ??? Shouldn’t the &quot;LOD_10&quot; model be the closest ???

The second issue is that even though the center of each cube is on the bottom face – which should represent the ground surface plane in FS9 – my three shapes are shifting position relative to how I had them positioned in 3DC… I had them stacked vertically in 3DC – so each subsequent LOD is shifted to the same relative position in FS9…

Any ideas ???

Scott

Hi Scott,

Yes LOD’s in FS are completely reversed – the number is something to do with the width of pixels on the screen – e.g. LOD_5 is shown if the object is only 5 pixels across, LOD_100 is usually the default LOD

I seem to remember that LOD’s in FS have to be built so the group centres are exactly at the same point in 3DC.

The FS exports are only needed for FSX which uses a custom X file format, with FS9 you can use the standard X file export.

Hi Paul,

Thanks for the insights – you help out wherever you go…

I guess I can live with the MSFS LOD’s – as they are way easier to work with than the MSTS LOD’s…

Nice looking Landrover…

I’m starting simple – I made some seasonal trees to match my autogen and built a new fence line (actually a modular component fence system to cover just about any layout)… I’ve got to do the LOD’s on the fence still…

I couldn’t get the &quot;translucent&quot; materials to work by setting the material pallete parameter to &quot;1&quot; – but – I’ll revisit that down the road a bit…
