Export of animation to MSTS fails

I finally got to testing this. I had to reformat my hard drive in order to revert to version 6.5.0.2.

If you select ‘Create Default Animation’ for a structure or scenery item the wizard changes the number of keyframes to 1 since a ‘default animation’ for a structure or scenery item is no animation. If you uncheck ‘Create Default Animation’ 3DC will not change the number of key-frames.

The TSW seems to ignore animation information and doesn’t write it into the *.s file any more. Has something changed since 5.7? (the last time I exported an animation succesfully)

It works for me. Anyone else having troubles or have a suggestion as to what could be the cause?

Richard

After checking and comparing the *.s file i found that there is not animation section in the new created files.
Btw it is not the animation of some loco parts but a moving ship and a rotating advertising tower for the scenery.

Hi hannes44. I am having a similiar problem. I have made a hand car with the rocker arm handle and a verticle drive rod for my route. I can animate it in 3DC but when I export to my route, there is no animation.is there something special I need to do..

I think you could try to set the handle and the drive as rods and animate like a steamer animation. I’ve got no problems doing animations for locos, sofar…
My problems are scenery objects-related, e.g. I made a ship and want to go her along a river for some miles, just a bee-line. It works a treat in 3DC but no animation in MSTS. (I didn’t forget to turn on animation of the object.)
I think there should be a section ‘animation’ in the *.s file pretty close to the end of it, but this section is missing and I found no way to convince 3DC that it should write such a section with the export.

My testing shows it exporting correctly. Can you attach an example that does not export animation? I can’t have you send it to me since my email is not working.

I seem to recall there is some trick (naming perhaps) required to make thing animate in MSTS. Someone else here would definitely know what needs to be done.

Richard

Are you animating the main group?

I don’t think 3DC exports main animations (it should, it works with gmax)

– you may have to add another ‘main’ group containing a single object (I usually use a downward facing triangle) and drag your hierarchy onto it – then export from the new main object.

(my first loco model, Sept 2001, still not completed)

Hi Paul. What I am trying to export is a little handcar like your little logo.I have been exporting it as a diesel, should I have been exporting it as a steam engine. It takes me a long time to figure out this stuff. My 70 plus year old brain is realy working overtime…..

Mine is a deisel – you can download it to take a look :

The wheels are actually set up as a bogie and the arm is the main wheel.

I’ve been meaning to add a ‘driver’ for ages…

Paul, I am sure you are right about 3DC not exporting animations of the ‘main’ group. It never occured to me that it was possible or sensible. But I can understand now that there may be a need for such a thing. And as far as I know nobody ever notified me of this particular issue. Unfortunately all of my ‘MSTS’ upgrades were in 6.5. There won’t be any more for a while. Your work-around seems managable for the time being.

My email seems to be working again. You can send me that model to <!– e –>support@amabilis.com<!– e –>.

Just one of the things I forgot to mention <!– s:( –><!– s:( –>
I had already built an animated aircraft model for MSTS and just assumed that was the way MSTS wanted it. Recently I noticed other models with the main part animated.

[b:tc9wl51j]A small extra note for those building animated objects:[/b:tc9wl51j]

If your animation takes the object outside of it’s starting position (e.g. aircraft moving) then you will need to make a change to the generated S file to expand the vol_sphere radius. Otherwise the object will vanish when you look away from where you placed it.

vol_sphere (
vector ( 0 0.553507 0.0298573 ) 1.37103
)

the value at the end of the vector line should be changed to about the maximum distance the object moves from the origin (sometimes up to 2000m)

Sorry to ask questions that are probably obvious to some people, but I just can’t seem to get my brain around this animation feature
1st,is the animation feature in 3dc just for items other than steam engines animated rods etc,or do you use that to set up the animation of say the pump handle on my handcar. Then use TSW to export.I tried just exporting it in TSW as a steam engine with the pump handle as a drive wheel,I got it to rotate, only it rotated 360 degrees. I just want it to move up and down from -35 to 30 from horizontle

Yes, you will need to create the animation of the parts within 3DC in order to define the way they will move within the sim. With your pump car handle working in the sim OK, you will need to create within 3DC an animation of the handle moving up and down, pivoting on its axis, otherwise it will spin 360 degrees like wa wheel would.Animations need only be done on wipers, fans, or in your case a moving handle. Wheels when named correctly will automatically animate within the sim. <!– s:) –><!– s:) –>
