Even more steam

Thanks Paul,

When I used to build 4mm scale British outline models, this was always my favorite.
So I was very pleased to find your model in the download section, it gave me the enthusiasm to start writing my TrainSim, but to be truthfull it’s more of a ‘watch the trains go by’ Sim. <!– s:) –><!– s:) –> But it keeps me busy.

Thanks again

Bazza

I’ve just about got this finished now.

I was having a problem with the textures but I tried the method used by Riverplate and added a small amount of noise to each texture. It worked a treat.

The model is Pauls 527 GWR loco which you can get from the model download section.

I rebuilt some of the parts and applied a new set of textures.

The MOGO van is my own, built with 3DC. Unfortunatly, in a recent house move I managed to misplace all my wagon drawings and photo’s.
So I’m not sure if I’ve got the van ends correct, so if anyone spots anything wrong please let me know.

I used Gile to produce the lightmap and the screenshot is from Blitz.

you train guys are fantastic, just about every time I open one of these posts, I fall off my nut. Bazza, the render of the train metals are superior.

Although I doubt if I could ever match your results, I wonder if you’d mind if I made one slight suggestion (not a critisism at all, I certainly couldn’t get your result). Your train tracks are geometrically perfect. While I’ve never built one, I’ve walked enough of them. Typically (maybe its just in the USA) the cross ties stand a little above the gravel (maybe a shadow thrown in to the texture map) and are blackened, distressed, split, and sometimes spaced with slight irregularity. I’ve seen piles of even new ties that were in pretty bad shape.

I realize this is a WIP and I may be speaking too soon, and I hope you’ll take my commentary as constructive.

and a question. Not having used gile(s), but curious, does 3DC import directly into it, like with PovRay, and are there advantages over PovRay?

Thanks gmani, for your very kind comments. <!– s:D –><!– s:D –>

I can see no reason why you or anyone else can’t
get these kind of results. If I can, anyone can. <!– s:) –><!– s:) –>
I’ve found it’s more of a case of using the right tools than anything else.

3DC can produce some great models and a descent paint package with plenty of practice will give good textures. I use PaintShop Pro ( I can’t afford things like Photoshop)

I use Ultimate Unwrap 3D for any complex unwrapping but find that unwrapping with 3DC does for most jobs.

What the end results look like though, are, I think the most important. It would be a shame, if after producing a nice model with good textures the final images ended up ,second rate.

Hense my use of Gile. At the moment you can’t import directly into Gil like PovRay but you can save your work in .x format in 3DC and import this into Gile
The next version will have an import plugin system, so I’m going to try and write a plugin for Gile
that will let you import a 3DC file.

Don’t hold your breath though, I’ve never written a plugin before and file formats, to me, are as interesting as watching paint dry. <!– s:) –><!– s:) –>

My main reason for using Gile[s} is that it is very easy to use and produces fantastic lightmaps, which for me as a Blitz user is very important.
When I load a file into Blitz the lightmap is carried with it, just like another texture. so all my locos, wagons, spaceships and anything else I build chug or fly around looking great.

Plus Gile is now becoming much more than a lightmapper/renerer, you can clone objects for exmple. When I did my Port Daniel(the night shift) see Model Feedback, I built one lamp in 3DC, loaded it into Gile and then cloned another 36 lamps!!

If you read through the OFF TOPIC section you will find more info on Gile. The demo is only a couple of megs download, it may be worth giving it a try.

If you do try it and need any help send me a PM.
GILE
RULES. <!– s:) –><!– s:) –>

Your right about the sleepers, all comments are welcome, I will get round to it one day, I’m busy building my station area at the moment.

I think you do a great job on your models! I wish I had half the talent you do. My area of interest is in WW2 aircraft and I’m still struggling with building a B-24 Liberator. Someday I’ll get the courage to post it.

Kind Regards,

RT

Hi Richard, and thanks for your comments.

I haven’t built any aircraft myself (yet) but I know someone who has. WW2 aircraft as well, aren’t you lucky.
Take a look here and enjoy. You need the 3D Model Gallery, you can double click the images to get a better look.

I think his work makes mine look very poor indeed, but I keep going back to this site just to stare in amazement.
It gives me some enthusiasm to try harder knowing what can be achieved, if you know how.

The site is run by Mustang who builds these things for a living, it’s the ‘if you know how’ bit he could probably help you with.
He has always been most helpful to me in the past over on the Blitz and Giles sites. Every time I ask a question he usually pops up and points me in the right direction. A really nice person.

There is a contact email address on the site. Give it a try. Let me know what you think to his work.

So how about posting your Liberator model as work in progress, with a list of the bits you’re stuggling with, someone will be able to offer some advice.

Very nice to see the old model being put to good use <!– s:) –><!– s:) –>
(my first steam loco, before I wrote all the plugins)

Lovely image Bazza.
