eBook: Anyone interested?

Looking forward to the release!

Hi Everyone,
I am currently working on an eBook about some of the simple modelling techniques that I use in 3DC, and was wondering how many people would be interested in having it. This book is written based on the operations and functions in 3DC Pro.

The website that I had sort of got andquot;toastedandquot; due to a server harddrive problem, and I’m looking for a suitable host at this time, to re-build my web page. I apologize to anyone who may have been using my tutorials for modelling guidelines or study materials, but I suppose these things do happen.

The ebook will not be very big to start with as I’m trying to keep the file size to a minimum. I’m writing it in the same way I did my tutorials(with images), and hopefully it will be completed within the next few days or so.

If you think you might be interested in having an eBook to use, please let me know either by email, or by posting a message here. I will either send the ebook via email or find a suitable download site, depending on how many people want it.

I’d love to see it!

Hi Guys,
Well I have completed the eBook, BUT I’m having a problem. When I try to open the book for reading, I get an error message. I’m not sure why this is happening as I have followed the instructions to the letter. Here’s what I’ve done to try and correct the problem.

I’ve created a self-extracting Zip file out of the four files needed. It will create a folder on your C:Drive named C:Simple3D, and extract the four(4) files there. The files are;

1) LicenseE.txt

2) eBooksReader_e.exe(this has to be installed on your machine for you to read the eBook)(double-click to install this first)

3) EBooksReaderFREE-e.aeh(this file is needed by the Reader)

4) Simple_3D_Modelling_Techniques.aeh(the eBook file)(double-click to read after the Reader is installed).

For the moment the book is in read only format with all copy and print disabled. If it will open, it should open in a window, and not full screen.

Now, if you would like to test the eBook just send me an email to <!– e –><a href="mailto:les2002p@aol.com">les2002p@aol.com</a><!– e –> and I will send the file(814kb in size) Name;(Simple3DModelling.exe)

If you don’t want to try the book this way, I understand and will keep trying to find out about the errors. As always, all comments and suggestions are welcomed.

Keep in mind that this is a small book with just a few(3) very simple modelling techniques that I use.

Les

I looked at the e-book. It’s very pretty with all the pictures and colorful background. You point things out well in the included graphics. And I’m amazed that we use the same modeling method and prefer the same cube primitive to start out with. I guess I’m not really that unique…

On the suggestions side, I’d like to see other modeling techinques covered. Like patches and uv mapping techniques. I’d also like to see tutorials on using several different programs together. (The following are just examples of using several programs together) I just downloaded the realsoft3d demo. It’s got physics simulations. I’d love to be able to put something like that into my keyframe animations in 3dc! Umm.. I’d also like to see how to use 3dc as a lightmapping tool for my blitz3d programs (Not sure if that’s possible considering the recent discussion thread related to it ) Umm. What else??

Oh.. Check out the microsoft e-book reader. I think that will allow you to be in windowed format. But I’m not sure if it costs any money to use it to publish. I think you may be able to find some *.lit conversion macros for MS word.. It’s worth looking into. And if you don’t have MS word, I’d be happy to convert your books for you, as long as we can find the *.lit converter. Or we could just release your document in *.RTF so that it can have all the pics and be viewable in wordpad.

Oh, people modeling! I’ve tried making people models but I’m not impressed with my work yet. If you’re artisticaly inclined towards this, I’d love to see a tutorial on that!

Ok.. That’s enough suggestions I think. I’m looking forwards to your next release.

From,

Ben

Ben,
Thanks for the suggestions. I only use 3DC for modelling, so I would not be a good speaker on the subject of using multiple programs, unless you count PovRay(and I’m not really great with it).

I think a lot of people get the impression that I’m some kind of expert on modelling, but nothing could be further from the truth. I’m still a novice in many areas.

I have UV Mapping/Re-Mapping, and texture unwrapping on my list of subjects that would be good, but I still have to learn more about them also.

Funny that you should mention the .RTF format because that’s what I wanted to do the book in first. I just happened to run across the eBookWriterLite and decided to give it a try. Know of a good RTF editor that is either free or has a lite version that allows you to complete the book?

I’ll check into the micorsoft reader and other stuff.

As far as people modelling goes….I’ve tried it and to be honest I suck at it…….LOL, so don’t hold your breath for a tutorial on that from me…… ;D andnbsp; We will have to let some of the other folks do that one.

Thanks again,
Les

I’m also looking into the .PDF format because so many people have the Adobe Acrobat Reader on their machines already. There would be nothing to install per-say. Also, the compression used in .pdf seems to be better than either .rtf or eBook. It’s going to take a little while to decide about this, so I will let everyone know later, when I make up my mind.

The next book will take a model from start to finish using/explaining as many of the 3DC Operations as possible. One of the things I will not be getting into is animation. I’m just not ready to do that, still lots more to learn.

Les

You can use wordpad to create rtf files and then include images using paint. The images need to be in bmp or jpg format I think. But as long as the person viewing the rtf file is using windows with wordpad and paint in it then the book should be displayable.

The only disadvantages that I can think of to this approach are that the file is editable by anyone who loads it. And the background can’t include images like in the e-book reader that you used.

Alan,
I’m trying out pdf995 now and it seems to be ok. I will have to purchase the key though to stop the browser from displaying ads.
What this program does is allow you to write the book or pages for the book in WordPad, or Microsoft Word, or something like that, and then when you finish writing, you just click on Print, and select to print with pdf995, which actually converts the page or book to the .pdf format instead of printing it on paper. It’s pretty cool! ;D
When I get a few pages or a chapter finished, I’ll decide it this is the way I want to go.
Thanks for the info anyway,

Les

a free one (?) with an ad at the start of your doc – or one for about $10 with no ad.

I don’t know how good they are.

Les

I’d be happy to read any hints you have to spread around.

As to format, I’d prefer you just used html. andnbsp;Second pref. would be .pdf, though the pdfs I’ve created all started in MS Word and were printed to pdf. andnbsp;Do you already have Acrobat. andnbsp;I understand there is a freeware proggy floating around that creates pdfs but I don’t know what it’s called.
