Barracuda; Latest Model

jonrach,
Yep just a cube… ;D
Sometimes I end up deleting and starting over, but seeing something gradually take shape out of just a cube, cylinder, or another primitive, is to me, a real pleasure. Thanks for the comments.

Les… ;D

This was created from a single cube, with no extras like guns and missiles yet. I’ll post the finished pic later on.

Comments?

You start with a single cube and just extrude, size and move ? You don’t add other primatives ? Does this give lower face/point counts ?

Anyway – yet another andquot;good oneandquot;.

I meant to ask Les… are you using 5.5 yet? And if so do you notice the difference in the Smooth operation?

Richard

Les,

Yes, 3DC’ Smooth operation does work quite a bit differently in 5.5 an higher. It follows the outlines better. A Divide followed by a Soften is more or less the same as the pre-version 5.5 Smooth operation.

Also, 3DC won’t run on Windows NT 4. You’ll need Windows 2000 or Windows XP.

Richard

Alan,
Yep it was just a cube, no other objects added. I started with sort of a long rectangular cube(front to back) for the engines and fueselage(spelling???) area, then used mostly extrudes, scaling, shifting, and softening/smoothing. After the main body was looking right to me, I then extruded and scaled the back wings, and the cokpit area(no smoothing on these). I think in most cases this would lower the face/point count, but with the amount of smoothing I use, the count goes way up anyway.

I have now added guns and missiles and will post that pic as soon as I can(not ready just yet).

Richard,
Yes I’m using v5.5 now, and I love the way the soften, and smooth operations are working. Especially the ability to use one in conjunction with, or instead of the other, as well as all the other really great features. I’ve noticed that the smooth operation seems to handle faces in some areas differently now. Especially in areas of indentation and protruding areas(where it is most noticable to me), it seems like it’s smoothing better. Was this a major change in the way smoothing works?
I’m having a real ball with the new weld operations too….. ;D
Keep up the fantastic work!

Les

P.S.
I haven’t downloaded the very latest(v5.5a) just yet as I’m probably going to put Windows NT 4.0(WorkStation) on this machine to see if it will handle the resources better than Win98SE. Any comments on changing to this OS?

just from a cube??

actually, I rather enjoy taking 1 primitive and extruding, scaling, shifting…. to get a really detailed model. Lots of satisfaction and I reckon it’s the best way to do low-poly!

it’s looking great!

Jon

Richard,
I knew there was a difference in the way it worked, but you know me and technical stuff…..hehehe.

Thanks for the info about WinNT4. I’ll scratch the idea as there is no way I’m going allow myself to not be able to use 3DC…… ;D
