Hey everyone, here is another model I’ve been toying with. Just a couple of flattened spheres with one of the new primitives for the cockpit and canopy, and a torus for the engine.
I also need some ideas for a couple of mother ships. One will be enemy and one friendly. Any comments or ideas welcomed.

Hey, I like that design a lot. It’s very unusual and yet is somehow seems to make sense as a fighter ship (though I take it it isn’t supposed to land). I don’t know about the main texture — I’d be interested to see it with a more conventional tex that looks like it could actually be the outer surface of a spaceship. With the one you’ve got, it’s hard to tell what’s going on around the cockpit. Other than that, I think it’s great; if you wanted to add more detail, I would suggest making the horizontal ‘wings’ a little different than the vertical ones, and perhaps make the vertical ones a little different from one another, maybe adding some feature to either the top or bottom one. It’s such a symetrical ship that a little touch of asymetry would probably look very nice, while adding a sense of practical realism.

Very cool.

By the way, what are you designing for–is this for your own game, or are you inserting into an existing one?

Gary,
Thanks for the comments. As for landing this ship? Hmm, hadn’t thought of that…..LOL
I agree with you about the wings, but I just couldn’t think of anything else to do to it at the time. This ship, in my thinking process was to be something like a fighter of unknown origin, cause it just came out looking that way.
As for the texture, I was thinking of changing the gunpods to something different so that they would show up better, and I haven’t put anything at all inside the cockpit yet.
My dream is to create a game in which I could use all my models, however I dont know anything at all about building a game, so I don’t know. I have thought about the possibilities of maybe having someone else using the models in their game(s), but don’t know if anyone would want to.
Thanks again for the comments. It gives me more to think about.

Les,

Well, it’s a lot of fun to fly your ships around in a real game. If you’re interested, you might want to consider getting the game StarLancer, a recent space combat sim that has great graphics. There’s a small community dedicated to designing new fighters for it, and they have all the tools needed to insert and format models for the game. Check it out at lancersreactor.com — it’s great fun, even if you don’t like the game that much. It has realtime antialiasing and specular effects, which create great realism, if your model is up to it!

Gary,
Hey thanks for the info. I have thought about buying StarLancer but haven’t been able to just yet. I will check it out though. After giving it some thought, I dont think it would matter to me what game it was, I would just love to see my models being used. That would be a real treat for me.

Here’s a couple of pics of the modified version of the model above. Tell me what you think. TopView shows the mods I did to the horizontal wings, and SideView shows mods to vertical wings.

Hi Les,

I like what you’ve done with the wings, particularly the horizontal ones. I must say that I prefer the proportions of the original though; in the new shots, the cockpit seems much more prominent–relatively larger and more forward–giving the ship a less powerful look. I like what you’ve done with the modeling of the cockpit, actually, but I thought it looked better smaller and more recessed. I’d try experimenting with different textures too, and some specularity on the wings. It’s certainly a cool concept.

As for flying around one’s models in a game, there may be a better and cheaper option than Starlancer coming up, with an on-line, responsive author like Richard to help us out. But it isn’t for sure yet, so I’m not supposed to announce it. Stay tuned.

Hi Gary,
Thanks for the comments again. The main reason I made the cockpit larger this time is because I had this idea of a life form of much larger proportions than that of humans. Although, with the cockpit so much larger, I thought it looked more comical, almost cartoonish, so I’m not real sure what I will do with it. I want it to look as believable as possible.
Also, I may have shortened the andquot;front to rearandquot; dimensions without noticing. I’ll check that out.
Thanks again, Les
