Drop a sphere
Select some points with the Rectangle selection tool (Alt 1)
Try adding some other points with Ctrl Alt 1: the previous selection is lost.

The issue is the "alt". It’s not used with selection.

What do you mean?
Using Alt 1 allows to select only the visible points.
With 1, you select all points of the rectangle area including those not visible.
Both commands are useful.
