3DC export to MSTS

Hi All,
I am attempting to export one of my Trainz models – origionally built in 3DC – into MSTS. I have 3DC v7.1.2. I have exported the file, without any reported errors, via the Train sim wizard and the resultant .s file and texture .ace files are all there in the correct MSTS Trainset folder. However, the shape fails to open in ‘Shapeviewer’ and reports an ‘error 5 – invalid procedure or argument’. I have not tried to open the shape in MSTS and assume if it won’t open in ‘Shapeviewer’ then no hope of it opening in MSTS. Does anyone know what ‘Error 5’ is ? I have opened the .s file in SFM, but cannot see any obvious errors.

A couple of things to check first.
Make certain there are no spaces in either the 3DC group names or texture names.

If the texture names have spaces, copy and rename the texture files then use the swap texture plugin to fix the problem.

Hi Paul,
Thanks for your response. Yes, I have set up object and texture names according to MSTS conventions, but I havn’t used MSTS for a couple of years now, so I have forgotten some of it’s idiosyncrasies. Somewhere in the back of my mind, I recall file names are restricted to no more than 8 letters, so I will have a play around with that and keep you posted.

Yes, that’s what it was – shortened all texture file names to 8 letters or less and BINGO ! I have been working with Trainz for a couple of years now and you quickly forget how critically acurate MSTS files must be.
